“The following on-line resources offer people a way to exchange and trade books for free:” BookMooch This on-line community allows people to exchange used books. Every time a member gives another member a book, he/she earns a point that will in turn allow that member to request a book from any other BookMooch member. After reading a book, a member may keep the book or make it available for another member to read. There is no cost to join or use the website. The only cost involved is mailing books to other members. A member receives one tenth of a point for every book that is entered into the system and one point each time a book is given away. To continue receiving books, members have to give away at least one book for every two books received. A member can also request books from other countries in other languages. Three points are received when a member sends a book out of the country, and the recipient is charged two points. Website address: http://bookmooch.com/ PaperBackSwap This on-line national club allows its members to share paperback, hardcover, and audio books with other members. Each member lists books she/he is willing to mail upon request. After listing the first 10 books, a member receives two “startup” book credits that can be used towards the selection of any other member’s books. For each book that is mailed to and received by another member, the sender receives one book credit (the sender receives two book credits for audio books and the recipient is charged two book credits). The only cost involved is the shipping of a book. One account may be established per person with a maximum of two accounts per household or address. Electronic Equipment
Replace the paragraphs in the introduction to this section (except the paragraphs on e-Bay, Earth 911, and the U.S. Postal Service with the following language:
“Used and unwanted electronic equipment represents one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world and particularly in the United States. Electronic waste, or e-waste for short, is comprised of various types of computer, office, audio, and video equipment, including such items as computers, monitors, laptops, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, telephones, stereos, compact disk (CD) and digital video disk (DVD) players, CDs, DVDs, audio and video cassette recorders (VCRs), and audio and video cassette tapes. These items contain toxic materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PVC plastics, and brominated flame retardants. When disposed of in a landfill, these materials can contaminate soil and groundwater over time. In an effort to address this issue, in January 2005 California became the first state in the nation to establish a funding system for the collection and recycling of certain types of e-waste. A fee is charged at the point of sale on computer monitors, laptops, televisions, and portable DVD players that contain a cathode ray tube (CRT) or liquid crystal display (LCD) and that have a video display screen measuring more than four inches diagonally. The current statewide fee varies according to the size of the screen: $8.00 when the screen is larger than 4 inches but smaller than 15 inches $16.00 when the screen is at least 15 inches but smaller than 35 inches $25.00 when the screen is 35 inches or larger Retailers are required to transmit the fees to the California Board of Equalization, which then deposits the funds into the Electronic Waste Recovery and Recycling Account. Approved collectors and recyclers of e-waste are eligible to receive a portion of these funds to help offset their costs to safely collect and recycle the materials.
