From 1994 through 2007, the Green Award Consortium honored up to five businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations that have undertaken voluntary activities demonstrating exceptional commitment or innovation beyond their primary mission in helping to protect, improve, and preserve the environment in such areas as solid waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, energy conservation, hazardous waste reduction and recycling, and prevention and/or reduction of pollution of the air, water, and soil.
In selecting the recipients, the Consortium considered the following additional factors:
-- Measurable improvements to environmental quality
-- Comprehensive environmental philosophy
-- Ongoing or long-term environmental benefits
-- Creativity and innovation in technology or approach
-- Model achievements
Businesses, nonprofit organizations, and private or public schools were eligible for a Green Award, while governmental organizations and individuals were not.
