Athletic Shoes

Through its Reuse-A-Shoe Program, Nike collects athletic shoes of any kind and any brand and grinds them up. Three types of materials are obtained from this process:

• Rubber from the outsole is used to make soccer, football, and baseball fields and weight room flooring;
• Foam from the midsole is used to make synthetic basketball courts, tennis courts, and playground surfacing tiles; and
• Fabric from the upper portion of the shoes is used as padding under hardwood basketball floors.

This program enables Nike to donate football and soccer fields, playgrounds, running tracks, and basketball and tennis courts to communities around the world.

The DePont Flooring Systems nationwide network removes and collects used carpeting installation scraps and then ships them to a DuPont recycling center. Every time DuPont Flooring Systems removes carpet and installation scraps from a job site, the carpet waste is recycled. At the DuPont recycling center, the fiber content and quality are identified and carpets are sorted according to their recycling value. Carpets can then be processed into reusable materials for such products as carpet cushion, sod reinforcement, and automobile parts. There are over 90 locations in the United States and Canada.
