Important Info Recycling Conserves Natural Resources
In addition to saving natural resources by reducing the demand for logging and mining, the following damages to the environment are avoided, including soil erosion, destruction of wildlife habitats, and increased carbon dioxide (CO2) levels due to the loss of CO2 -absorbing trees.
According to Californians Against Waste, in 1996, Californians prevented the logging of 70 million trees through recycling. This is equivalent to 230 square miles of forested timberland, an area thirteen times larger than the City of Santa Barbara.
For every ton of paper that is recycled, 17 trees are saved, 10,401 kilowatt-hours of energy are conserved, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space are preserved, and 7,000 gallons of water are maintained.
