Recycling Saves Landfill Space

It is vital that we reduce waste and recycle here in Santa Barbara County. Recycling diverts materials from area landfills, increasing their capacity and reducing the urgency to site a new landfill in our County. The same is true for other communities. Throughout the state, recycling has made a significant impact on availability of landfill space. For example, the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) reports that as a result of recycling and waste diversion efforts, the state’s landfill capacity, estimated in 1990 to be adequate for just 13 to 18 years, increased to as much as 28 years in 1995.
