Recycling Reduces the Amount of Pollution Associated with Manufacturing

Creating one ton of paper from virgin sources pollutes 730 gallons of water. While recycling paper isn’t perfect, it does reduce water pollution by 35%. In addition, creating paper from recycled materials reduces the use of water by 58% according to Letcher and Sheil's The Solid Waste Handbook: A Practical Guide.

Water conservation is another important issue for Santa Barbarans – as those of us who do our best to conserve water well know. In California, annual water demand is predicted to exceed supply by 3.7 to 5.7 million acre-feet by the year 2020 due to the demands of a growing population. Wet and dry years come and go, but the challenge of providing water for a growing population remains constant in California, making efficient water use essential.

There may be plenty of water on the planet, but in those areas where abundant water doesn’t occur naturally, it is important to conserve water.
