In 1999, Armstrong World Industries, Inc. launched the first program in the United States for the recycling of ceiling tiles. Under this program, Armstrong will pay the shipping costs for businesses that send at least 30,000 square feet of their ceiling tiles to one of seven company plants. These plants then use these ceiling tiles as raw material to produce new ceiling tiles. To increase participation in the program, the company has also certified contractors who serve as regional consolidators of used tiles, a component of the program that helps firms that have less than 30,000 square feet of ceiling tiles.
